A handstand is not just a trick - there is a lot going on in the move that helps you in a range of different ways. Here's a little summary of some of those things..
Intention: No one goes upside down and balances perfectly by accident. You have to have the idea, judge your surroundings, make the decision and then execute. Practicing the ability to execute your intentions helps build confidence.
Core stability. You have to be able to control your body in an inverted line, this control comes when you use your core. Ask anyone (who knows what they're talking about) the most important type of strength in the human body is core strength and with handstands you need your core strength!
Mobility. Wrist and shoulder mobility are key to a healthy handstand. You need healthy mobility to hold your handstand and if you want a body with longevity, you need mobility.
Confidence. Being able to focus on holding the move and disregarding any people's reactions or distractions around you is key to a successful handstand. Having the confidence to stop, drop and handstand wherever you are and whenever you want is a liberating feeling and why handstands are so popular and enjoyable.
